Introduction in Oil painting in Monochrome. Part 2
Before we start painting with a full colour palette, it is essential to practise recognising and mixing tones well. For this reason, we will paint using the pick out technique or what is also called the reductive method. This course is focused on painting, so we accept beginner drawers. This will give us a good foundation before doing a Colour mixing course in Summer.
In the three morning classes we will learn about:
- how to use the reductive method which creates a very translucent effect and is a great method to learn about paint and how thick and thin it can be applied.
- we will learn about how to read the tonal values in a still life and then an animal or human portrait.
- how light reveals a form and creates shadows.
- transferring a drawing to a canvas and then paint it.
- how to paint slowly and how to blend.
- how to deal with oil painting mediums and how to look after your painting tools.
Materials: Oil paints, canvas boards, brushes and medium will be provided. All you need to bring is an apron!!
If you are interested, contact me via email or phone 0466662712 to check for availability.

Artable Workshops 2024
2 day workshop
Charcoal Portraits on Toned Paper
with Manuela Pilz
July 13th and 14th 2024
After her Darcy Doyle win for portraiture with "A Man in Thought", Manuela Pilz is visiting us from Tasmania to share her experience in shading and portraiture with us again. Join her in this weekend workshop where you will have 2 whole days to explore a traditional tonal method for portraying the portrait on toned paper.
With step-by-step demonstrations, participants will have the opportunity to learn about how to draw a head, neck and shoulders and the features of the face but this year we will work with a three-quarter angle which is the most common angle in portraiture.
You will be introduced to the tools and guidelines that help get proportions and dynamic and helpful warm up exercises will be given in how to draw tonally with white and black charcoal. Manuela will, throughout the two days, give guidance, feedback, and support.
The reference images will be supplied by Manuela and time will be given to explaining the process of choosing a good reference image for a tonal drawing. We will look at how light reveals the forms on the face and how we can show this in our drawings.
Who is this course for?
Beginners to portraiture are welcome
This class is recommended for those who have not only drawn for some time but also for those who have done any of the 1-Day drawing workshops at Artable and are ready for drawing a large head using different types of charcoal. If you are not sure whether you are ready, please contact our staff for advice.
If you attended the workshop last year or the year before
As each year I focus on a different angle of the head, you can revisit this workshop and still learn. This workshop will be a perfect opportunity for you to revise these skills but with a different image and different angle.
If you have drawn a great deal before and have finished the first studies and head at the end of the first day, we can work on an image brought in by you on the second day. It is important to look at Manuela's guidelines on photo reference photos (info below) and it is recommended we draw adults not children to practice the proportions taught in class. For those of you learning to draw the face for the first time, it is recommended you work from a photo reference supplied by the teacher to avoid unnecessary challenges.

Oil painting Workshop for Grisaille

Time: 10 am - 4pm (6 hrs)
Course price: $250 materials included
(weekend price $395 with colour mixing workshop on Sunday below)

Before we start painting with a full colour palette, it is essential to practice recognising and mixing tones well.
We will be using just two colours to mix up our tones and create strings of tone. We will also learn about the qualities of Ivory Black and Titanium white, and how to apply paint to create a three-dimensional form of a face.
This is excellent for beginners and for more advanced students as you can refine your understanding of brush work and edge control without having to worry about mixing a wide range of colours.
Grisaille is often done as an underpainting (look at October workshops) and then the colour is applied on top of this underpainting, but they can be beautiful studies in their own right.
Materials: Oil paints, canvas boards and medium will be provided. Materials list will be provided for brushes,

May 2021
Painting in the Wild is back with Whaia Creation posing for us.
Really this is Sketch Theatre but in the winter we set it outside.
Last year with the arrival of Covid there was the risk of all group art activities being halted. Luckily due to the availability of a wonderful garden at the Garasu Art Studios property, we could continue to draw or paint from life and socially distance surrounded by beauty.
From this was born 2 art activities - Painting in the Wild or Drawing in the Wild. Go to the News Blog to see photos of last years events.

About Workshop
This drawing workshop will be a perfect opportunity for those artists who love or are ready to try drawing from a model with the support of an instructor. Drawing a clothed model is a great opportunity to not only practice drawing the whole figure and folds of clothing but more importantly it helps to enhance the character. Sometimes it is difficult to move away from working from photographic reference, and one of my strengths as a tutor is to help artists dealing with the usual physical and mental obstacles that come up when drawing from life. The workshop will then be a combination between working from the reference photos - to assist participants to grasp the methods of working through the more challenging aspects of drawing a figure-and then from the model themselves. This blended approach provides a progressive yet manageable method to assist the participants understanding in drawing the figure from live observation.
Media: Several types of charcoal and chalk on toned paper or with graphite.
Fees: $695 with a non-refundable deposit of $150 to be paid by Wednesday 17th February 2021

Time: 9 am -3.30pm (5.5 hrs)
Fee: $58.
Max numbers 12 participants
Venue: Garasu Art Studio, 10 Adios court, Mudgeeraba
Who is this for?
This is a day for those of you who wish to hang out with like minded people who like to paint or draw a clothed or nude sitter from life. It is untutored so some experience in drawing from life is recommended.
The person posing may be a local artist, model or personality that has been invited by Sketch Theatre. We like to create a theme of setting to create opportunities for different compositions and for narrative. The model will be posing in the same pose all day. If you would like to be put on the Sketch Theatre mailing list to be informed as to who is posing for the next event please contact me on my email. [email protected]
February 28th We will have Aarti Rajaj sitting for us which is a great honour. She is a local actor and dancer and we are excited about working with Wild Dreamer Productions and celebrating our growing ethnic communities on the Gold Coast. I am really looking forward to how everyone will interpret her energy and power.

There are many of you who are curious about joining my life drawing classes but feel you need a little preparation before dealing with the pressure of a live model.
This 2 day workshop is designed to break everything down into manageable steps and take away the the feeling of overwhelm when confronted by a life drawing class and especially when dealing with quick short poses.
We will draw both the female and male figure and look at the main differences in how to draw them. Standing, seated and lying poses will also be explained. A lot of attention will be given to how to represent the energy of the model, its relationship with the setting and simultaneously check on proportion.
To keep it for absolute beginners we will be working mainly from photo reference. However, some three dimensional references will be used too to prepare you for working from life.
This workshop will be done at Garasu Art studios in Mudgeeraba in the studio during summer and in the winter it will be done outdoors. This is a special workshop I plan to do just once or twice a year if there is demand..
