First time doing a workshop in Launceston!!!
Studying Portraits using Toned Paper
1 Day taster drawing workshop
Join Manuela on this one-day workshop where you will have the opportunity to try out a traditional method for portraying the portrait on toned paper.
By looking at drawings from artists from the past, we will see how this method was used to capture quick sketches from their models and how they use the paper to speed up capturing the form.
With step-by-step demonstrations, participants will have the opportunity to learn about how to draw a head and their features of the face using white and black charcoal on the coloured toned paper of your choice.
You will be introduced to the tools and guidelines that help get proportions. Dynamic helpful warm up exercises will be given in how to draw with white and black charcoal using the paper for your mid tones. We will look at how light reveals the forms on the face and how we can show this in our drawings.

Course Description
Join portrait and life drawing teacher, Manuela Pilz (TAS) in this 3-day weekend workshop and be introduced to the drawing tools to help create a large portrait in charcoal.
In this class we will examine how to draw features of the face and the form of the head with emphasis on using comparative measurement, dealing with proportions and how to depict features of the face with charcoal using the reductive method. After several requests for how to deal with drawing hair, Manuela has introduced a new section to this workshop which will dedicate time to teaching how to draw hair effectively and expressively. We will create another piece focusing on how to show the form, structure, and texture of hair.
Level
This class is recommended for those who have not only drawn portraits before but also for those who are beginners to drawing the portrait.

Who is this course for?
- This course has been designed for those artists who would like to get sufficient tools and skills to give them confidence in portraiture.
- Drawing directly from a sitter is an experience every artist interested in portraiture should try out and doing this with the support of a teacher and your classmates makes it a perfect opportunity to gain a great deal of skill in drawing in a short amount of time.
- If your family members no longer want to sit for you, or you have been too shy to ask people to pose for you, this is perfect for you. Manuela will organize a model to come and sit all week for you.
- This is also a good course for those of you who have been working from photos for some time, but you know you need something new.
- After a week from drawing from life, you will notice a great development in your skills and change how you draw back at home.

Att times we will work from photos taken from the model to help with the clothing. This will give us plenty of time to complete a study from our muse. Throughout the day, I will be coming around and giving assistance and demonstrating to the whole class important strategies. There will be ample time to enjoy breaks, cake, yoga, meditation and the beautiful view too.
What will you learn?:
How to:
- draw the head, neck and shoulders from different angles and the features of the face.
- slowly set up a drawing from a long pose
- draw someone in proportion but also with feeling and expression.
- draw folds and material.
- represent the light falling on the form.

Painting in the Wild is back with Whaia Creation posing for us.
Really this is Sketch Theatre but in the winter we set it outside.
Last year with the arrival of Covid there was the risk of all group art activities being halted. Luckily due to the availability of a wonderful garden at the Garasu Art Studios property, we could continue to draw or paint from life and socially distance surrounded by beauty. From this was born 2 art activities - Painting in the Wild or Drawing in the Wild. Go to the News Blog to see photos of last years events.
Painting in the Wild is usually a costumed figure set outdoors, however, at times the model will pose nude. This is an untutored life painting or drawing session so some experience is required.
For tutored sessions please contact me regarding Drawing in the Wild which is a tutored session on the second Saturday of each month. For more info go to Life Drawing page.
For Whaia Creation come on the 30th May 2021
Usual Dates: April - September 4th Sunday of each month.
Time: 9am till 3.30pm
Fee: $58 and model cost included.
Venue: Garasu Art Studio, Mudgeeraba, QLD

About Workshop
This drawing workshop will be a perfect opportunity for those artists who love or are ready to try drawing from a model with the support of an instructor. Drawing a clothed model is a great opportunity to not only practice drawing the whole figure and folds of clothing but more importantly it helps to enhance the character. Sometimes it is difficult to move away from working from photographic reference, and one of my strengths as a tutor is to help artists dealing with the usual physical and mental obstacles that come up when drawing from life. The workshop will then be a combination between working from the reference photos - to assist participants to grasp the methods of working through the more challenging aspects of drawing a figure-and then from the model themselves. This blended approach provides a progressive yet manageable method to assist the participants understanding in drawing the figure from live observation.

There are many of you who are curious about joining my life drawing classes but feel you need a little preparation before dealing with the pressure of a live model.
This 2 day workshop is designed to break everything down into manageable steps and take away the the feeling of overwhelm when confronted by a life drawing class and especially when dealing with quick short poses.
We will draw both the female and male figure and look at the main differences in how to draw them. Standing, seated and lying poses will also be explained. A lot of attention will be given to how to represent the energy of the model, its relationship with the setting and simultaneously check on proportion.
To keep it for absolute beginners we will be working mainly from photo reference. However, some three dimensional references will be used too to prepare you for working from life.
This workshop will be done at Garasu Art studios in Mudgeeraba in the studio during summer and in the winter it will be done outdoors. This is a special workshop I plan to do just once or twice a year if there is demand..
Contact me on [email protected] to make a reservation.
