Drawing For Fun
Term 3

Wednesday 15th October to 2nd December 2025
4.30 to 6pm. (shorter time for younger class)

This introductory drawing course nurtures children's natural love for drawing. We focus on fostering both imaginative expression and observational skills. Children learn to see and capture the world around them while developing fundamental drawing techniques. This class is perfect for curious children who want to improve their drawing abilities and make their artwork more realistic. As children progress, they can advance to our Tuesday class for young teens.

This term, Manuela will again guide children in observational drawing using the renowned MONART method but this time we will learn about buildings. We'll explore Drawing a City from our Imagination. We will start by learning to draw a scary building for Halloween with an introduction to perspective and then we will draw a cityscape with buildings going off into the distance.
Lower price for younger class $400 for the 8 week course for early bird booking ends 30th September
Limited numbers of 8 students.

At the same time we will research all the compositional devices these artists have used. We will be looking at American and Australian illustrators.
By working with these famous paintings, sketches or prints they will learn about

3. Draw the subject matter of their preferred subject whether it is portrait, figure or multi figure scene, sculpture, urban or rural landscape, or still life.

About the School
A unique opportunity for creative teenagers interested in learning and developing drawing skills in realism are offered at The Brisbane Street Art School, Launceston with Manuela Pilz as the tutor. We have also started a new class for children who are keen to draw too with a fun introduction to drawing. Once they are 12, they will be able to join the Tuesday academy with the older students.

Venue
The Attic Studio Level 2 or 1st floor for Wednesday classes.
The Brisbane Street Art School
Brisbane Street Arcade
Launceston, Tasmania

This school, founded by Leoni Duff Tasmania’s master pastel artist and painter, is situated in the oldest historic building in Launceston and is a highly regarded and established centre for studying the visual arts with an emphasis on learning from great artists past and present.
How important is learning to draw?
Drawing is a necessary fundamental basis for all art forms including animation and concept design, graphic design, architecture, sculpture, industrial design, and representational painting. Animation and movie studios value artists trained in the classic tradition. Even Walt Disney encouraged his animators to regularly go out and sketch outdoors from life.

How to apply:
For Drawing for Fun on Wednesday:
As our school is not a general arts and crafts class, we recommend parents and child coming into the school to see if they would like to learn how to draw here. Phone us to make an appointment.
For the Academy on Monday and Tuesday: The criteria for entrance will not only be an ability to draw but more importantly evidence of a curiosity and desire to develop and try new skills. To ascertain this, a face-to-face meeting with a series of drawings or portfolio and/or sketchbooks will be arranged at the beginning of the term prior to course commencement.  The interview dates are stated on the schedule above.  To ensure your place on this date, a booking by phone or email is needed.
