Decorative Arts and Patterns in Drawing
Explore the psychological comfort, rhythm, and structural power of repetition in art. Inspired by William Morris, the Pre-Raphaelites, Art Nouveau, and contemporary Australian still life artists, this course teaches you how to use geometric and floral patterns to guide the viewer's eye and add conceptual depth to your work.
Through a series of meditative yet practical exercises, you will build essential drawing skills, including negative space recognition, line control, and the art of simplifying complex, ornate designs to avoid visual overwhelm.
Course Outcomes & Projects: Over the duration of the course, you will explore art history and complete three finished pieces:
- A Floral Study: Mastering organic rhythm and pattern breakdown.
- A Patterned Still Life: Balancing foreground subjects with complex backgrounds.

Suitable for artists looking to enhance their composition skills and enjoy a deeply focused, meditative drawing experience.
